The first thing you need to know is the insolation for your area.

http://www.solar4power.com/solar-power-insolation-window.html

has a table for major US cities, and the links have other information. Next, you need to calculate the maximum use, including any inefficiencies if you need to use an inverter to power 120 VAC appliances.

Actual power consumption in watts * hours in use (recorded by a kill-a-watt meter) will help you determine your inverter size (maximum watts at any one time), battery size (total daily consumption in ah (watt hours / battery voltage), and solar sizing (to replace battery capacity used).

My earlier post on this subject got a lot of attention and many people shared there successes, ideas and dreams.

So I thought some of you might like to see how I live with no house payments and no monthly utility bills.

I created this short video of my homestead and explained how many of us new homesteaders and most of the old homesteaders become self sufficient.

I think you will find something of interest in it and I think it is a great video to show kids that are interested in living a different life than the one the media tell us we have to have.

Enjoy!
